Transitional Kindergarten (TransK)
Monday - Friday
9:00am to 12:00pm*
time extends to 12:30 when we return from Christmas break.
Transitional Kindergarten programs have been in existence since the 1990s as a way to give children a gift of time. As more academic pressure has come to bear upon kindergarten, there has also come the realization by many parents that it is often developmentally appropriate, especially for children with summer birthdays, to consider an extra year. Transitional Kindergarten offers the opportunity for children to mature academically, socially and emotionally. With that extra year, Trans K students enter Kindergarten as “thicker” learners, with a strong foundation that serves them well for all of their elementary years. They enter middle school and high school with one more year of maturity and often exit much better prepared to begin the young adult stage of life. A gift of time now may be the gift that continues to give for years to come.
Our Transitional Kindergarten program is designed for children who could go to kindergarten but whose parents have decided another year before Kindergarten is appropriate . Once TransK is filled by children who are already 5, if space is still available, we will consider older children from our 4 day 3s program who will turn 5 in October or November. These children should be almost ready for kindergarten, but simply have to wait another year because of their October / November birthday.
Our Trans K program starts at a point where you might find a traditional 4 year old class in January, and ends up looking like a Kindergarten class in late fall. TransK is paced according to the needs of the individual children; it will, therefore, look a little different each year as each child's learning level is met and then moved forward. Typically, the teachers begin incorporating kindergarten concepts and activities into the curriculum by mid year. Some children are ready to begin receiving guided reading instruction after January.
Aldersgate KinderPrep bases it's curriculum on the Comprehensive Standards for Development as set forth by the State of Virginia. Click on the link below to review Virginia's Foundation Blocks for Early Learning.
